Cyberpunk 2 / Polaris Confirmed for 2027 — Inside the CDPR Tech Stack

Unreal 5.4 with custom RT pipeline, 520 engineers full-time, day-one Linux SKU. The handheld build is the engineering signal that matters most.

CD Projekt Red dropped the first real Cyberpunk 2 / Polaris technical details: Unreal Engine 5.4 with a custom path-traced GI pipeline, V returns as protagonist with a mid-campaign character handoff, 520 engineers full-time, and a confirmed 2027 ship window. The reveal trailer leaned on Night City B-roll, but the underrated engineering signal is the day-one Linux build.

A native Linux SKU at launch is a structural commitment, not a marketing line. It signals that CDPR expects Steam Deck and Steam-OS handhelds to carry meaningful unit share across the title lifecycle. Vulkan-first rendering pipelines, Proton-aware shader caching, and frame-time budgets sized for 15-30W TDPs are the engineering choices that cascade out of that decision.

The whitepaper hints at a persistent inventory layer that survives across runs. The wording is careful, but the architecture described is consistent with wallet-bound item storage. Whether CDPR ships that as on-chain or as a centralized account-bound system is the open question.
