NBA 2K League Dissolution — What Comes Next
The first major franchise league dissolution. The lessons land hard for the rest of the publisher-run circuit.
Take-Two and the NBA confirmed the dissolution of the NBA 2K League at the end of the season. Eight years, $90M+ in cumulative subsidy, and a franchise model that never reached self-sustaining viewership.
The structural lesson is that publisher-funded leagues with franchise buy-ins fight a brutal cost curve. Salaries, venue, broadcast and arena production all scale with size, but viewership scales with title relevance — and 2K is a deep but narrow community game, not a broadcast-friendly esport.
The read-across hits Riot most. League franchise slots in NA and EU traded at $10M+ in 2018; secondary-market quotes today are well below that. If publisher subsidy dries up at any point, that math breaks fast.
